This rattle is a bald male that features dot eyes and a large nose. It has a wide cupid’s bow (the little dip between nose and upper lip.) It has thin lips and an open mouth. It can be held in one hand but more comfortably rests in two.
This rattle is about 4 inches tall and 2 inches wide at the base. It has quite a few balls inside, creating a full sound. It sounds like a maraca combined with a bell.
It is named Joe for the glaze that is on it—Joe’s Green. It has been rakued.
There are subtle finger marks on this rattle—you can see where I held the rattle when I dipped it into the glaze. Many ceramic artists leave the finger marks and do not patch them up because it is a sign that the piece is hand made and not factory made.
Note that raku items are not food-safe. Child supervision recommended. (Playing is fine, chucking it at a wall is not.)
