We stare down barrel of the assassin’s gun barrel and get the last look of Saint Oscar Romero as he celebrates the Holy Eucharist just before he was gunned down by government forces. Archbishop Romero had been singularly outspoken against the violence created by the conflict in El Salvador. Government death squads were mercilessly murdering poor civilians in it’s efforts to win the civil war raging in it’s country. Archbishop Romero would take to the radio, the pulpit, and the press encouraging soldiers to stop blinding following orders and to follow the laws of God in addition to his regularly duties of pastoring his flock and leading Opus Dei gatherings. For his outspoken defense of life, the poor, and the innocent, Bishop Romero was shot down while consecrating the Precious Blood of Our Lord during mass.
