This work is a team effort. I’m a leather man and my little brother is a wood working madman specializing in making pieces from salvaged wood, so the wood this leather is tacked to has a history all its own.
The Image and leather are my end. I take an image and burn it into the leather by hand, then dye it and seal it, using various dying and burning tricks to create the tones in the leather that bring the image to life.
This particular image is of one of my all time very favorite Saint, and he was my confirmation saint also. The beautiful drawing I used for this piece was one I had done custom by an amazing little art shop on Etsy. Little Beads Art, is wonderful and worth checking out, especially if you love the image in the pictures above, here is a link to her site:
My idea in making this was form meeting function. I wanted to make something rich and beautiful that still served a purpose— hence the hooks. Add a little atmosphere to your home and some convenience at the same time, while encouraging us to remember the communion of Saints and the mystical Body of Christ, of which we are all a part.
