Traditional Pysanky – Hand-Drawn Egg Design, Made-to-Order

Pysanky are a traditional religious craft from Eastern Europe, originating before Christianity entered the area. Since then, the eggs have been re-imagined with new imagery, most often about Easter. The process involves laying wax down on increasingly darker dyes, so that when all the wax is melted away, an intricate, colorful pattern remains. These beautiful eggs are then hollowed-out so they can be displayed in the home.

I learned this process from a woman who has been writing Pysanky for 25 years. This listing is for one egg of a traditional pattern, with your choice of darkest color and number of colors in the overall pattern. White will always be the lightest color unless another is requested. A 2-color egg, for instance, would be white + dark. A 6-color egg would be white + dark + 4 colors in between.More options are available than shown.

If you have specific designs you want included, please let me know! The eggs are hollowed out by hand with only one hole, and sealed in 3-5 coats of polyurethane. Each egg comes with a small plastic stand and a description of the imagery used. Each egg is made-to-order, and will arrive in approximately 2 weeks.
