The title comes from a line of a medieval hymn dedicated to Mary, “Mary the Gate, Christ the Heavenly Way”. A copy of the poem is included with each print. This medieval hymn explaining the role of Mary in God’s plan of salvation refers to Mary as the Gate through which Christ enters the world.
