Description

A collaborative work between The Knotty Celt and Visual Litany (https://peterssquare.com/shops/visual-litany), this lithophane, when back-lit, reveals a visual interpretation of The Lord’s Prayer.

Lithophanes originated in France, and were originally produced by acid etching porcelain in such a manner that when back lit would reveal a stunning image. The thinner porcelain would become translucent, while the thicker parts remained opaque. Varying thicknesses in the material produced varying levels of translucency and opaqueness. This is how images were produced when putting a light source behind the porcelain. The Lord’s Prayer lithophane is produced using modern technology to recreate this art form. It begins as a soft lead pencil drawing by Visual Litany. The Knotty Celt analyzes the varying shades and tints to create a 3D model which is then 3D printed using poly-lactic acid, an organic plastic made from plant starches and is biodegradable.

Message The Knotty Celt

The Knotty Celt was established by Andrew Brownrigg.  He combined his passion for the beauty and complexity of Celtic knots with his adept 3D modeling skills to create knots with deep meaning.  With the innovation of the 3D printing industry, he was able to realize his knot patterns in physical form.

Each piece is made by 3D printing a tangible model in casters’ wax.  The wax model is then used to make a plaster mold.  Next, the plaster mold is used to cast the piece from molten metal.  This technique allows for some very complex knot patterns to be realized in the physical world.  Having been cast as a single piece, also means the knots are truly infinite loops, with no seams – an otherwise impossible feat.
