This is a digital download pattern. It is not the completed shawl.
This crochet pattern was uniquely designed to be completed while praying a novena. A novena is a set of prayers prayed over nine consecutive days. The tradition of praying novenas traces back to the nine days after the Ascension that Apostles and Blessed Mother prayed and waited for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.
This beginner crochet pattern is intended to be created over the nine days that you pray the novena. The pattern includes the prayers for the novena to St. Peregrine, patron of cancer patients, AIDS patients and serious illness. Each day, you will have the opportunity to pray the prayers, plus meditate on carefully selected scripture verses and reflections that will help you to imbue each stitch you create with love, support and prayer. Each day’s crochet work should take approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on how quickly you crochet.
Once you have prayed and stitched your shawl, you can now gift it to whomever you have labored lovingly for. This novena prayer shawl represents more than just the warmth and comfort it will provide. It is also a symbol of the prayers carried not only by you, but also St. Peregrine, to our Heavenly Father. If you have chosen to create this shawl while praying for a more general concern (for example, all cancer patients or those with terminal illnesses), it would make a beautiful gift for a hospital, nursing home or homeless shelter in your area.
This pattern was made with a size N Hook and Bernat Roving Yarn, Cobalt. You will use double crochets and V-stitches, instructions included. The finished shawl is 44″ long and 18″ wide. The pattern also includes the formula for lengthening or shortening your shawl length.
