St. Martin, soldier and bishop, patron saint of soldiers. This image portrays the moment when, as a bodyguard to the Roman Emperor, he divides his cloak in two to share it with a beggar he met outside the city gate. The artist was inspired by her eldest son who chose St. Martin as his confirmation patron. He was drawn to the saint who was strong and faithful, showing that faith does not necessarily mean meek and obedient, but can be strong and fearless as well.
